Stages Of The Assessment

There are seven stages in our assessment process, guiding you from understanding the assessment procedure to receiving results and exploring the next steps.

Stage 1 – Complete an application

If you believe you or your child are ready to begin the assessment journey, the first step is to complete an application form. Once we receive your form, we can schedule an introductory session to start the assessment process. Please reach out to us, and we’ll gladly provide you with the application form.

Stage 2 – Introductory session

During this consultation, we will explore your reasons for seeking an assessment, gather background information, address any questions about our approach, and collaboratively decide whether to proceed with a full assessment.

Stage 3 – Personal history interview

This session is designed to explore how autism and/or ADHD may impact your or your child’s life. We use a structured interview format to ensure that all key areas are thoroughly addressed, but the session is intended to feel more like a natural conversation.

Stage 4 – Observational assessment

This session takes place in person at one of our assessment bases or at a place that you prefer. We complete a series of activities and tasks that help us see if autism and/or ADHD is a helpful description for your experiences. There are no right or wrong answers and we will go at you or your child's pace.

Stage 5 – Meeting with others

We will usually aim to interview someone who knows you or your child well, such as a teacher, parent, close friend, or partner. This is typically conducted online, though in-person sessions are also an option.

Stage 6 - MDT Meeting

The clinicians involved in the assessment will meet to discuss the process, review all the information gathered, and determine the outcome and recommendations.

Stage 7 – Feedback and results of the assessment

This online appointment is conducted with the clinicians who carried out the assessment. It provides an opportunity to review the results in detail, including the determination of whether autism and/or ADHD are appropriate diagnoses or if there are alternative ways to understand the differences you have observed.

Reaching a Diagnostic Decision

  • We thoroughly review all the information gathered during your appointments and compare it to the criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

  • The process involves carefully evaluating the data against the diagnostic criteria for autism and ADHD while also considering any alternative explanations for the concerns or challenges you or your child may be facing.

  • We take this process very seriously and would never provide a diagnosis without sufficient evidence.

  • If our decision does not align with your expectations, we will discuss this with you and reflect it in our report.

  • Our goal is to deliver a thorough and relevant assessment for you or your child, with a clear outcome and recommendations for support.

  • In rare cases where we are unable to reach a diagnostic conclusion, we will provide a detailed summary of your or your child’s social communication profile, along with comprehensive recommendations for next steps.
